Tent Size Guide: What Size Tent Do You Need?

"What size tent do I need?" is the question we get asked more than any other — and it's an easy one to get wrong if you're guessing. This guide walks through how to estimate your tent size based on guest count, layout style, and any extras you're planning, so you can request a quote with confidence.

How to Estimate Your Tent Size:

  • Square Footage Per Guest:

    • As a general rule of thumb, plan for about 10-12 square feet per guest for a seated meal, and closer to 6-8 square feet per guest for a standing cocktail-style event. This accounts for the table itself plus room to pull out chairs and move around comfortably.

  • Round Tables vs. Rectangular Tables:

    • Round tables for rent generally use space a bit less efficiently than rectangular farm-style tables, so if you're tight on tent size, long tables can help you fit more guests into the same footprint.

These numbers are a helpful starting point — your ideal size will vary based on table style, chair type, and how much open space you want for guests to move around.

Seated Meal vs. Cocktail-Style Layouts

A formal seated dinner needs significantly more square footage than a cocktail-style reception with high-top tables and lounge seating, since every guest needs a dedicated chair and table space. If your event includes both a ceremony and reception under one tent, size up to account for the layout change between the two.

Don't Forget Space for the Extras

  • Dance Floors, Staging & Bars

    • If you're adding a dance floor, staging, or a bar setup, build in extra square footage beyond your seating estimate — these features typically add 200-400+ square feet depending on size.

  • Buffet Lines & Gift/Cake Tables

    • Self-serve buffet lines, gift tables, and cake tables all need their own dedicated space along a tent wall or corner — plan for these before you finalize table placement.

  • Walkways & Guest Flow

    • Leave clear walkways between table rows (about 3-4 feet minimum) so guests, and any catering or serving staff, can move through the space easily.
